Water Resources Management Consultancy in support of institutional establishment in Shire River Basin: Configuration of base case MIKE Hydro Basin model to be used in scenario analysis for water resources development scenarios

The Fish River catchment in Namibia is an area of concern to the Government as it is a flood prone area having registered very high floods, causing extensive damage to the town of Mariental and the irrigation schemes downstream of Hardap Dam. Measures needed to be put in place to curb further damage as the catchment undergoes its natural flood cycle. The system was modelled, and various mitigation measures were analysed and suggested for the area.

This pilot project was used to develop a flood prediction system for the IUCMA using the Mike Operations software. The system was successfully implemented and ran flood forecasts on the Crocodile river system in the Inkomati catchment. It contains a predictive hydrological model as well as a hydraulic model integrated into a real time operational framework.

Investigation of Surface Groundwater Interaction of the Gamagara River. This was an investigation into the problems associated with Swallet formation in the Gamagara river and looking at detailed hydrological modelling to assess the downstream impact on the river system and look at various high level remediation options.

In this project an analysis was performed to determine if there was enough water to support an irrigation scheme in the upper Lunsemfwa Catchment in Zambia. The project was being developed by Nordzuker. The analysis yielded significant impacts on downstream users including the Lunsemfwa hydropower scheme and infrastructure interventions to ameliorate yield impacts were considered too expensive to support the irrigation water requirements.

A hydrological and water resources model was set up in the Kafue Catchment as a pilot to provide a framework for the understanding of the Impacts of Climate Change on the area.

Project consisted of performing an initial development of the Information and Communication Infrastructure Strategy, an Operations and Maintenance strategy, Water balance calculations for the Kafue Catchment Pilot and Climate change simulations for the final Simulations in the Kafue Pilot Catchment.

Set up system to provide a full hydrologically corrected DEM for the entire Inkomati Catchment Management Agency. The requirement was to use detailed contour data to generate a DEM at high resolutions and then generate a corrected DEM river delineation, catchment delineation and calculation of dam volumes.

Set up an information management system as a pilot for the BECSA area. The system was set up to integrate various information sources into a single database.
