The business management guru Peter Ducker said “if you do not measure it you cannot improve it.” We would go further to say if you do not measure you do not know if you have improved. In order to understand how to improve water use in your home the first thing to do is measure and understand your current water use. Fortunately, for the most part, domestic dwellings are equipped with water meters so the council can bill you on a monthly basis. You can use these to better understand and improve your water use?  If you would like to understand more on how to use your municipal account and existing meter to identify leaks and benchmark you water use please go to the understand section, which explains more in this regard.

Many people are installing their own smart water meters at household level. While expensive there are several advantages here, namely:

1. Early leak detection (There meters are smart and are able to tell you if you have a leak or pipe burst). With municipal meters it may take several months to identify a leak depending on reading frequency.

2. It enables you to check the accuracy of water bills from the council.

3. It helps for a better understanding of different items household water use.

4. Assists in bench marking water use against others and identifying areas of easy water savings.

Reduce

Leaks and unnecessary water consumption are major contributors to the overall household water use. It has been shown that in an average household without a garden or pool, water use by toilets accounts for xx%, while water from the faucets accounts for xx%, showering contributes another xx% and leaks account for xx% of the overall water budget. However in many houses leaks can go undetected and contribute a much higher percentage to the overall water budget.

It has been recognised that the most cost effective way of reducing your overall water consumption is to target these high water use areas and fix household leaks. These measures can reduce your overall water consumption and reduce your water bill dramatically often resulting in cost saving which pay off the initial expenditure in a matter of months.
