Our water products are sorted into 4 main categories, measure, reduce, reuse and augment. Measurement enables the users to get a better understanding of water use and potential problems you may have with your water consumption. The value generated from implementing specific solutions varies. In general reducing water use and fixing leaks is the most effective method of reducing water consumption and offers the lowest costs and best returns on investment. While reuse and augmentation solutions tend to be more costly and provide lower returns on initial expenditure.  Please choose the category you would like to investigate in more detail.

Measure

The business management guru Peter Ducker said, “If you do not measure it you cannot improve it.” We would go further to say, "If you do not measure you do not know if you have improved". In order to understand how to improve water use in your home the first thing to do is measure and understand your current water use. Fortunately, for the most part, domestic dwellings are equipped with water meters so the council can bill you on a monthly basis. You can use these to better understand and improve your water use.  If you would like to understand more on how to use your municipal account and existing meter to identify leaks and benchmark your water use, please go to the understand section.

Many people are installing their own smart water meters at household level. While expensive there are several advantages here, namely:

  1. Early leak detection (These meters are smart and are able to tell you if you have a leak or burst pipe). With municipal  meters it may take several months to identify a leak depending on reading frequency.

  2. It enables you to check the accuracy of water bills from the council.

  3. It helps for a better understanding of different items for household water use.

  4. Assists in benchmarking your water use against other water users and identifying areas of easy water savings.

Reduce

Leaks and unnecessary water consumption are major contributors to the overall household water use. It has been shown that in an average household without a garden or pool, water use by toilets accounts for 26.8%, while water from the faucets accounts for 15.7%, showering contributes another 16.7% and leaks account for 13.7% of the overall water budget. However in many houses leaks can go undetected and contribute a much higher percentage to the overall water budget.

It has been recognized that the most cost effective way of reducing your overall water consumption is to target these high water use areas and fix household leaks. These measures can reduce your overall water consumption and reduce your water bill dramatically often resulting in cost saving which pay off the initial expenditure in a matter of months.

EkoSource has a range of solutions which reduce household water consumption and knowledge that enables you to identify and reduce household leaks:

  1. Faucet flow reducers and inset retrofits, these reduce volume flowing in taps in high use areas such as bathroom and kitchen washbasins.

  2. Shower volume flow reducers, which reduce flow volumes but still maintain a good shower pressure with enough volume.

  3. Low flush or two flush toilet systems which are able to reduce toilet flushing by up to 60%.

  4. Finally, household pressure stabilizing valves which are able to maintain a consistent household water pressure and can substantially reduce leaks.

Augment

There are several options to augment a home's water supply. Rooftops represent a good way of capturing rainfall and water can be used in various activities such as irrigation and pool filling. Boreholes can also be a good way of supplementing water supply and reducing dependency on disrupted water supply in some areas. EkoSource has a number of options to augment water supply. These vary from different water tank options to the drilling of boreholes.

Reuse

Water reuse is another area where water savings can be recognized. EkoSource has information relating to re-usable water fit for purpose and designs for DIY grey water recycling systems. EkoSource is able to provide a number of greywater recycling systems which can be used to provide gardening water and water to flush your toilets, thereby reducing your water bill substantially. The greywater systems do not offer the same return on investment as implementing water saving technology. The payback periods of the greywater systems are in the region of 1 to 5 years depending on which options are implemented.
